Mahir told himself time and again he absolutely trusted Ridley, perhaps more than he should have. The reason he’d given him the location of a generic parking lot a few blocks from the ferry dock wasn’t distrust or the fear that the piece of paper with his address might wind up in the wrong hands. His house was just . . . hard to find. Lots of turns. Streets that looked the same, signs that were hard to see.
Fidgeting in the driver’s seat, he watched for Ridley. The ferry had pulled in a few minutes earlier, and the steady stream of cars and walk-on passengers crept past.
Was this really a good idea? Bringing Ridley into Mahir’s world? His car? His bedroom?
Kinza wouldn’t be home. He’d gone to his sister’s for the weekend; apparently she was attempting to mediate the bullshit between father and son.
Mahir and Ridley would be alone. Nothing about this seemed remotely like a good idea, but as it was, they were both going out of their minds. The stress of the club kept driving them to take bigger risks, so they needed to blow off some steam and just relax for a goddamned night. Make sure they were on the same page.
Mahir kept watching the road.
And there he was. A sharp tingle accompanied the sight of Ridley in his jeans and tight T-shirt, a backpack balanced on one shoulder. Mahir swallowed. His two realities just ripped and began humping each other.
He rolled the window down and waved, and Ridley’s sunglassed face turned toward him. And, dammit, but that was a smile tugging at the man’s lips. Butterflies in his stomach? More like a horde of red-assed apes going berserk in there. Damn. Ridley should not have this much of an effect on him, but it seemed the cat was out of the bag. No chance of containment now. And he couldn’t just drive away, either.
Calm. It’ll be fine.
Ridley pulled open the door and swung his fine ass inside. Mahir stared at him for a moment too long, then scanned the parking lot and any people still left on the ferry who might be watching. But nothing. For all anyone else knew—or cared—they were just a couple of guys meeting up for a booty call. Though that would’ve likely included a kiss hello.
Mahir started the car. “All good on your end?” He started the engine and looked over his shoulder before he pulled out.
“Yeah. Made up a bullshit excuse.”
Mahir lifted an eyebrow, wondering again if they weren’t taking too much of a risk being away from the club at the same time. Well, as long as they didn’t establish a pattern, it should look inconspicuous. Though Lombardi was smart. You really couldn’t be a crime lord without having a sense for people. “I guess even the boss can’t have you working 24-7.”
Ridley gave a quiet laugh. “Not unless he wants me falling asleep on the job and missing important shit.” Ridley looked out the passenger-side window and murmured, “Like cops on the payroll.
